What Causes Water and Flood Damage

What Causes Water and Flood Damage

Water and flood damage is caused by water pooling in areas that are dry, but being aware of its causes can help you take preventative measures.

Though hurricanes and torrential rains are some causes of flooding, most people won’t live through a seriously damaging hurricane in their lifetime. There are, however, plenty of other causes of water damage that hit much closer to home.

Some of the most common causes of water damage and flooding are:

Broken or leaking pipes

One of the most common causes of water damage in homes is broken or leaking pipes. Major temperature changes can wreak havoc on pipes and cause them to burst. Old and worn pipes are more prone to breakage and deterioration.

Old or faulty household appliances

Washing machines, dishwashers, and water heaters can cause water damage to your home when their hoses become weak and prone to cracking. Refrigerators can also cause problems when they get old.

Weather-related water problems, excess rain, or natural disasters

Hurricanes, higher-than-average precipitation, and other weather-related disasters can cause flooding and water damage in homes, particularly when the water builds up in areas like crawl spaces, attics, and basements.

Problems with HVAC (heating, ventilating, and air conditioning)

When HVAC systems are serviced regularly, moisture can accumulate and cause a leak and attract mold and mildew quickly. Be sure to have your HVAC system checked by a professional often.

Plumbing problems

Toilets overflowing and sewer lines or systems backing up are just some of the plumbing problems that can cause water damage in your home.

Other causes

Clogged gutters, sprinklers running too long, and improper grading are some other potential causes of water and flood damage.

What Kind of Damage Can Water and Flooding cause?

The most common concern with floods is mold. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) states that mildew and mold can develop within 24-48 hours of water exposure. Because of how quickly mold can develop, it’s important to get rid of water as quickly as possible after flooding or water damage has occurred. In addition to mold concerns, there are plenty of other kinds of damage that can accompany a flood.

According to ready.gov, flooding can cause floors to buckle or warp, ceilings and foundations to crack, and electrical wires to fray or break. Household appliances can be seriously impacted by a flood. HVAC units, kitchen appliances, washers, and dryers may be damaged depending on the severity of the flood.
